With Biscayne Bay, a huge swath of white-sand coastline, and the shimmering Atlantic Ocean, Miami has some of the best views in the world. And since the weather is nearly all the time balmy, once the sun goes down being surface is a diminutive bit of heaven. And there's no good way to enjoy both the views and the atmosphere than by having a cocktail at one of the city's cool roof bars.
The hippest places are only open on weekends, but there a few that are also open in the afternoon. Drink prices are all the time steep, so be ready for sticker shock. And some of the most popular spots can be difficult to get into, so wear your best clothes.
Miami Beach Hotels
For the best views, Club 50 at the Viceroy sets the bar. Settled on the 50th floor, it's only open to hotel guests and condo residents during the day. But on Tuesday straight through Sunday nights, top local Djs spin dance music for a young, pretty crowd. With a pool near the bar and an Asian look that uses lots of marble and wood, it's one of Miami's more elegant cocktail bars.
Gansevoort South put mid-Beach on the map when it opened in 2008. A huge infinity pool surrounded by palm trees and private cabanas lit by chandeliers make Plunge a great place to see and be seen. Patrons look down 18 stories to the Atlantic Ocean and beach below and enjoy mojitos and other freshly made cocktails on the 24,000-square-foot teak deck.
The Spire Lounge on top of The Hotel was created by designer Todd Oldham. Its overstuffed white sofas with colorful throw pillows and brightly painted floorboards set a casual tone that's fun and festive. The space is backed in the neon glow of the sign for the old Tiffany Hotel - a very cool touch. Spire is open to the group on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and tapas are served.
Well known to locals, but off the radar of most tourists, the Rooftop Lounge at the Townhouse Hotel is a great choice is you don't want a lot of attitude and you don't want to spend a fortune. Recently renovated with big, red umbrellas and king size waterbeds, it's more intimate than most of the other Miami roof bars. And the crowd here is friendlier.
